Victor Hugo
Victor Hugo came to us at 3 years of age after being on a chain most of his life. He'll still tell you his sad, sad story if you ask. (This is where he gets his name.) He was rescued and brought to me shortly after the dog he was chained next to was found choked. Additionally, he doesn't seem to grow a winter coat and he was an outdoors-only dog in 15 degree winters. I do not know how he survived.
He was thin, unfamiliar with the world, and scared of everything, especially the cats. He is now happy, well-conditioned (fast), responds to most of my requests, and loves his hikes in the Sierras with his brothers and sisters. We do have to wait for him some days as he is a tracker breed... and when he gets the scent of mule deer you can just find a good vantage point and watch him and a small herd bouncing along in the distance!
He has the black and tan hound coloring and voice but is more the size of a long-legged beagle and even acts like Snoopy from the cartoon Peanuts, dancing on his hind legs and shaking his head while being silly and howling in happiness. He has a pretty white chest and paws and is always trying to sit in my lap and stroke my hair with his paw.
